wsrRecycler of the Year Award

This spring, we were proud to accept the Washington State Recycling Association's 2026 Nonprofit Recycler of the Year Award — and we accepted it on behalf of every neighbor, volunteer, and partner who has walked through our doors.

For nearly 40 years, Our Place has operated on a simple belief: that reuse, sustainability, and human dignity belong together. Each year, more than 13,000 low-income community members access grocery-rescued food, surplus hygiene products, gently used clothing, and household essentials through our one-stop shop — goods that would otherwise go to waste. In just six months alone, we helped divert over 546,000 pounds of food from landfills.

We are grateful to WSRA for this recognition, and most of all to the community that makes this work possible.

Our Place Community Outreach is proud to announce it has been selected as the Washington State Recycling Association’s “Recycler of the Year for Non-Profits,” recognizing nearly four decades of leadership in waste reduction and environmental stewardship in Spokane. Serving more than 13,000 low-income neighbors annually, Our Place operates a dignity-centered, choice-based, one-stop-shop model that diverts usable goods—such as grocery rescue food, surplus hygiene products, zero-waste cleaning supplies, gently used clothing, and household items—from landfills and into the hands of those who need them most, directly addressing both environmental impact and community need. In just six months, the organization distributed more than 546,000 pounds of food and repurposed thousands of pounds of essential goods. A hallmark of this work is its grocery rescue program, which uses an electric vehicle to collect surplus food from local stores and deliver it the same day, transforming potential waste into immediate nourishment for families, seniors, and individuals. Additional programs, including a Laundry and Clothing Center that extends the life of clothing and the redistribution of housewares, further support a thriving circular economy. With minimal barriers to access, multilingual services, and a deep commitment to equity, Our Place has become a trusted, replicable model shared through regional partnerships and collaborations. Recognized by the Washington State Department of Ecology through its Public Participation Grant, Our Place continues to demonstrate that reuse, sustainability, and human dignity can go hand in hand to strengthen communities and protect the environment.
